Water softener resin consists of small, porous beads typically made from polystyrene or a similar polymer. These beads are coated with sodium ions, which are exchanged with calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water through a process called ion exchange. As hard water passes through the resin bed, the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin beads and replaced with sodium ions, effectively softening the water.
