A rotameter consists of a tapered tube with a float or rotor inside it. The tube has a larger diameter at the bottom and gradually narrows toward the top. As fluid flows through the tube, the float rises, indicating the flow rate on a scale marked on the outside of the tube. The position of the float is proportional to the flow rate of the fluid.
